The current building was built on top of a much older castle in 1815, during the Battle of Waterloo. The area and the castle itself had been fought over for years by the Spanish, the Flemish, the Dutch, the English, the Burgundian and finally the French in 1713. It was sold to the Mayor who enriched it with fine stables and decorations. The hotel stands close to the heart of the city, but it is also ideal for those guests who prefer the peacefulness of the countryside, as they can explore the trails and nearby villages on foot or on a bike.
