What is the history of the property? Perhaps a former coaching inn, perhaps not... What we do know is that Louis-Edmond Antoine le Picard de Phélippeaux (1767 – 1799), a French émigré best known for defeating Napoleon Bonaparte in an effort to defend Egypt did have ties to the Lyon d'Or.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built? We do not have the exact history of the buildings, though we have been told that the buildings were built between the 14th and 18th centuries. Thick stone walls, wood beams, terra cotta tile floors.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings? The Relais du Lyon d'Or is located in the center of Angles sur l'Anglin, one of the 100 or so "Plus Beaux Villages de France" where you'll also find the ruins of the 11th century castle dominating the Anglin River Valley, the prehistoric site "Roc aux Sorciers" and several other historic sites.
Has restoration work taken place? The majority of the restoration work was undertaken in the 1990s. A few bits have been renovated since.
