The blueprint started in 1887 with William Cornelius Van Horne's vision, build an impressive hotel in the Canadian Rockies. The hotel enjoyed continuous renovation until the Fire of 1926 where its wooden foundations were burnt down. A few years later, the hotel was rebuilt to a bigger castle and with a much more resilient structure. During the Great Depression, the hotel closed for 3 years and was reopened but struggled to reclaim travellers due to location and the economic crisis. By the '70s, the hotel regained its glory thanks to the increasing influx of travellers in Banff. Today it's regarded as the prestigious "Castle in the Rockies".

Historic Hotel

Arguably the oldest hotel corner in America, dating back to the Spaniard foundation in 1607, it boasts rich history and atmosphere. With its expansive 400 year history, it was the go-to lodging among trappers, soldiers, gold-seekers, gamblers and politicians. During the Civil War, New Mexico statehood and railroad expansion, the hotel structure changed and developed over time while still maintaining some key architectural elements. In 1922, it received its first modern iteration despite the changing owners. When it was leased to Fred Harvey, he turned it to one of his Harvey House gems until 1968. During that time, it was a vital piece in the puzzle of turning the wild west into a more progressive and inclusive region to women and people of color.

Edwin Wiley Grove, a then-famous investor and now dubbed as the "Father of Modern Asheville", bought 408 acres of land in Asheville to build residential neighbourhoods. After two years, Grove started planning the hotel with Seely. Hand built by 400 men hauling granite boulders from the Sunset Mountain, the hotel opened for business less than a year later. Jennings Bryan, the Secretary of State, delivered an address for the grand-opening. The hotel is a proud member of the "Historic Hotels of America".
