Hornbach Monastery was established in 742 by St. Pirminius as a Benedictine monastery. The gentle hill landscape of the southwest Palatinate corresponded with the monks' ideal place of sanctuary for self-reflection. Hornbach marks the end point of the Palatine Way of St. James and offers hikers and bikers diversfied routes to explore the beautiful nature. In the centuries to follow the monastery experienced a moving history: from the blossoming of a small monastery to its nearly complete dereliction. After several years of restoration and renovation, the former monastery ruin was ready to be opened as a hotel in May 2000.

This castle dates back to 756 as mentioned in the records of Benedictine Abbey in Weissenburg. With its expansive life, it has been destroyed by invasions, rebuilt, plundered in wars and rebuilt again. It was recorded as a moated castle in the 15th century with its water system dating back to 12th century. The only way to get into the castle in the Middle Ages was through a drawbridge. It wasn't until 19th century when the stone bridge was built.
