It started as an elite enclave for German expatriates in Singapore around 1900s. It was then bought, renamed to Godwood Hall and reopened as a café-restaurant in 1922. As the business flourished, it was turned to a luxurious hotel in 1929. Noted guests included the Duke of Windsor, then the Prince of Wales of England.
