Located on the private island of San Clemente, San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice is a luxurious historic hotel. The island, and later on the hotel itself, got its name from the Pope Clement I. On the island, a church was ordered to be built in the 12th century, which was renovated in the 14th century and accommodated monks throughout the centuries. In the early 19th century, all the Camaldolese monks were forced to leave the church and the island when Napoleon Bonaparte suppressed the Italian religious orders and the monastery was abandoned. It was first renovated and opened as a hotel in 2003, while the Kempinski group purchased and re-opened it as the luxurious hotel it is today in 2016.
