Historic
Steeped in history, The Lamplighter Bed & Breakfast is a captivating 1894 Queen Anne Victorian estate, originally built by Dr. George W. Crosby. Born in Allegan, Michigan, in 1861, Dr. Crosby relocated to Ludington after graduating from the University of Michigan in the spring of 1885. A year later, he married Viola Gaudette, and together they resided in the home until it was sold to Harriett J. Pelletier in 1899, following the couple's divorce.

The house later passed to Charles E. Cartier, a prominent industrialist and former mayor of Ludington from 1908-1909, who also served as a State Senator after being elected in 1910. Cartier inherited the home from Harriett in 1904, and in 1921, it was sold to Dr. Frederick William Heysett, a local surgeon. After Dr. Heysett's passing in 1939, the house changed ownership several times.

In 1966, Kenneth and Mabel Anderson acquired the property, and over the next 24 years, the elegant house served various businesses, including a Secretary of State office, dentist office, beauty parlor and real estate office. As the building transitioned from a residence to a business, structural alterations were made, including the removal of the grand porch and balcony at the Ludington Avenue entrance.

In 1990, Mabel Anderson took it upon herself to restore some of the home's original charm, transforming it into a Michigan bed & breakfast. Heinz and Judy Bertram purchased The Lamplighter in April 1993, continuing the restoration efforts. Bill and Jane Carpenter succeeded as Innkeepers and Proprietors for 14 years, ensuring that each guest received a warm and gracious welcome.

Today, the current proprietors are dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of this beautiful home and extending a heartfelt welcome to every guest who crosses its threshold, honoring the legacy of The Lamplighter Bed & Breakfast's storied past.
