Luxury Hotel
This 5-star hotel is a national monument housed in an 18th-century building, exuding historical grandeur and opulence. It features an art gallery and is renowned for hosting prestigious events, offering an exclusive experience.

Historic Hotel
Housed in a meticulously restored 18th-century building, this hotel is a national monument. Its grand architecture and historical significance make it a landmark in Oviedo, offering guests a unique experience steeped in history and luxury.
Year erected: 1777
What is the history of the property?
In the 18th century there were various causes for the abandonment of children. Economic needs, illegitimate children, food shortages and the impossibility of caring for the children made the work of the hospices and children's homes essential.

With the construction of the Hospicio y Hospital Real de Huérfanos, Expósitos y Desamparados de Oviedo, the Regent Isidoro Gil de Jaz began a policy of reforms in Asturias aimed at curing the ills of an ailing society. Its construction took up most of the second half of the 18th century, and it functioned until 1965, when it was closed by the Provincial Council.

In the following years, the building suffered a prolonged period of abandonment during which various uses were proposed, including that of a large cultural centre. This period culminated with the installation of the Hotel de la Reconquista in 1973, after having undergone extensive renovations that began in 1958.
In his Hospice and Royal Hospital project, the architect Pedro Antonio Menéndez proposed a design based on a large central courtyard at the back of which a chapel would be located. Menéndez laid out two square courtyards on either side of the chapel, and a Baroque façade presided over by a large coat of arms of Spain.

The architect Manuel Reguera also took part in the development of the works and was in charge of supervising them. The building was continued in 1768 with the construction of the chapel designed by Ventura Rodríguez.

Currently managed by the Eurostars Hotel Company chain under the name Eurostars Hotel de La Reconquista 5*, the former Hospice is a historical monument declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1973. Inside it has several works of art, such as three murals by Joaquín Vaquero Palacios, paintings by Mariano Moré, Adolfo Bartolomé and José Purón Sotres; as well as a banner of Carlos III and a sculpture of San Roque Peregrino.

In addition to its artistic value, it has a close relationship with the Royal Family, and since 1980 it has been the venue for the Princess of Asturias Award jury meetings and decisions.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The Asturian Hospice is one of the most important buildings in the region, not only for its architectural value, but also for its extension of almost 15,000 square metres. Its various interior courtyards are reminiscent of the layout of other similar buildings, such as the former royal hospitals of Santiago de Compostela and Granada.

Its layout also resembles the hospital model that emerged in the middle of the century with the Hospital de Afuera in Toledo, the work of Alonso de Covarrubias, and the Hospital de Santiago in Úbeda, designed by Andrés de Vandelvira, both of which have their churches behind a large courtyard. Pedro Antonio Menéndez took as his model the traditional layout of Spanish hospitals, although with structural and decorative elements of local use, which became more evident in the façade.

Dinner
Dinner at Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista has been met with mixed responses. While some guests praised the quality and taste of their meals, describing them as very nice and excellent with great service from staff like Christina, others found the dining experience less satisfactory. The dining room itself received comments about its attractiveness, though it was noted to be inadequately organized and somewhat dull.

Guests enjoyed the bar snacks, which were described as very good and reasonably priced and appreciated the fine cooking when choosing to dine in. However, the main restaurant faced criticism for having a limited menu and low-quality set dinners. Some reported trouble with dinner reservations and were disappointed to find the actual restaurant closed without prior notice, a detail not reflected on the website. Additionally, there was frustration over the absence of certain in-room amenities like coffee machines and minibars, impacting the overall dining convenience.

In summary, while the bar offers quality snacks and the restaurant staff, such as Sergio in the Bar Americano, enhance the dining experience with excellent service and cocktails, the main restaurant struggles to meet the expectations of a five-star establishment.

The junior suite, in particular, received accolades for its size and sound buffering capabilities, making it a serene haven.

The staff is frequently noted for their unbeatable service and the breakfast offerings are highly spoken of, adding to the overall positive experience at the hotel. Certain rooms may show signs of wear and tear, such as small carpet stains and discolored wallpaper, but many guests felt the beautiful architecture and historic charm of the building more than compensated for these minor issues.

Overall, the general consensus is that the beds are a standout feature, offering significant comfort and relaxation. The hotel has received praise for its large, king-sized beds and super comfortable bedding, ensuring a satisfying stay for most visitors.

Cleanliness

On the positive side, many guests applaud the hotel for its clean rooms, well-maintained facilities and overall tidy environment. Some praise it as a very clean hotel with modern amenities and spacious rooms. The corridors and luxury meeting areas also receive commendations for their cleanliness and upkeep.

However, a significant number of reviews point out areas needing improvement. Complaints range from average room cleanliness and worn-out furniture to specific issues like dirty bathrooms, moldy bathtubs and stained carpets. Instances of broken curtain hooks, discolored wallpaper and scoff marks on wooden floors detract from the overall cleanliness experience. There were also reports of housekeeping deficiencies, such as not replacing used tea mugs, missing towels and lack of replenishment for amenities.

Guests have also mentioned disappointing aspects like uncleaned private terraces, bird dirt on windows and overlooked housekeeping on arrival. Given the mix of very positive to highly critical reviews, it appears that while the hotel maintains a generally clean environment, consistency in cleanliness and attention to detail require significant improvement.

Wi-Fi
Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista offers free wifi, which generally registers well and provides a good, high-speed connection in various areas of the hotel. Guests commend the wifi service for being reliable with a strong signal, making it suitable for both communication and holiday planning.

However, many guests have faced significant issues with the internet service. There are multiple reports of very weak or non-existent wifi in some rooms and spotty, inconsistent connections throughout the hotel. Some have found the wifi connection to be problematic with frequent interruptions that hinder work and other online activities. These issues required some guests to reboot their connection, a process they found cumbersome.

Inconsistent internet service is a frequent grievance with some guests experiencing completely unreliable wifi that fails to meet the expectations of a five-star hotel. The problem appears systemic, often not resolved over extended stays, impacting the overall guest experience.

It's advisable for future guests to inquire about the current state of wifi upon check-in, as this seems to be an area where the hotel has room for improvement.

Parking
Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista offers a range of parking facilities that have generally received positive feedback from guests. The most praised aspect is the ample and spacious underground parking, which provides easy access and contributes to a comfortable experience. The convenience of having parking on-site is often highlighted as a significant advantage with many appreciating the secure and private underground garage available.

Guests were pleased with the excellent and secure parking facilities, finding the arrangement to be superb, especially the garage directly underneath the hotel. However, it is worth noting that parking incurs an additional cost, which some guests found steep, typically around 23 euros per night. Despite this, many felt the convenience and ease of access justified the expense.

While the majority found the parking spacious and accommodating, a few guests mentioned that some areas, particularly on the 2nd basement level, could be challenging to access due to narrower spaces. Overall, the parking at Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista is viewed as a significant convenience for those traveling with a vehicle, balancing spaciousness and security with the added expense.

Family
Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista offers a pleasing experience for families, providing a variety of activities that cater to both adults and children. Additionally, guests appreciated that their children could partake in unique activities, such as practicing the piano.

The hotel environment is described as family-friendly with a focus on family involvement during meal times, particularly dinner. Guests noted the joyful atmosphere of the corridors and the cultural surroundings that enhance the family experience. However, some reviews mentioned issues such as the noise from children playing in the courtyard and a few outdated furnishings in the rooms.

While family accommodations were not always available online or upon check-in, the overall consensus is that the hotel successfully caters to the needs of those traveling with family and offers an enjoyable stay for both adults and children alike.

Nightlife
Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista offers a prime location for those looking to experience nightlife, being situated close to cafes, lively bars and clubs. Guests appreciate the convenience of having these options nearby, alongside easy access to shopping. The proximity to the old town adds charm to the experience. However, it's worth noting that noise from wedding receptions and other events at the hotel can be disruptive and finding a place for a late-night drink after midnight can be challenging, as many venues close by that time.

5 Star
Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista, situated in Oviedo, exudes charm and a prime location, making it undoubtedly the best hotel in the city. The hotel's luxurious corridors reflect a certain elegance and the staff's attention seemingly aligns with the service expected from a five-star establishment, comparable to other luxury hotels.

However, multiple reviews suggest that the facilities and services fall short of what is expected from a five-star hotel. While the location and some aspects of the hotel's atmosphere meet luxury standards, several areas do not comply with the five-star designation. Guests have noted particular shortcomings, such as the lack of Wi-Fi in rooms and limited room service options, which are unacceptable for a hotel of this category, especially during a pandemic. The building also lacks a bar-café service until 20:00, which detracts from the overall experience.

In essence, while Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista offers a picturesque stay with attentive staff, it seemingly does not uphold the full range of amenities and service quality typically associated with five-star hotels.

Business
Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista is a favorable choice for business travelers, offering a large hall well-suited for business meetings and a well-equipped business center. Its strategic location makes it convenient for business trips. Many guests find the hotel excellent and ideal for business stays. The working environment is generally adequate for completing tasks.

However, there are some noted drawbacks. There have been instances where the business facilities were not available and some guests faced issues with the working wifi, which was problematic for those needing to communicate for work purposes. Additionally, the absence of a business center and daily newspapers during some stays was a noted inconvenience.

Overall, despite a few shortcomings, the hotel remains a desirable option for those traveling on business.

Accessible
Guests found 'Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista' generally accessible with several positive remarks about the hotel's efforts to accommodate individuals with disabilities. Many highlighted the accessibility of the entrance and noted that some rooms are easily accessible. The hotel is wheelchair accessible and provides adequate facilities for disabled persons. Guests appreciated the easy car accessibility, indicating that those arriving by vehicle would face no issues. However, some noted areas for improvement, mentioning that not all spaces are accessible and there were difficulties moving around. Clear access signs and better placement of accessible routes were also suggested as areas needing attention. Overall, while the hotel provides good accessibility, there is room for enhancement in terms of comprehensive access across all areas.
