The Pousada has great historical importance and some of its medieval features are dated as far back as the 9th century. The castle was given as a gift from King D. Dinis to Queen Santa Isabel for her wedding, which also took place in the establishment, and is one of the most impressive wedding sites until today.

The castle was built in the 13th century by King Dinis for his wife, Queen Isabel, who also gave her name to the castle. Many centuries later, the castle was used by the military, but an explosion destroyed a part of it, and after the government of Portugal restored it, it was opened as a hotel.

The castle was built in the 15th century, although it is believed that a former castle stood on its grounds since the Roman era. After a severe earthquake, most of the castle was destroyed, but renovation works brought it as close as possible to original state before being turned into a hotel in 1993. The castle is also considered a National Monument.
