The George Hotel combines old-world charm and modern convenience, making it a beloved choice for travelers. Located centrally in the heart of Pangbourne, guests appreciate its proximity to the railway station, local amenities and picturesque River Thames. This prime locale serves as an ideal base for various activities such as events at Englefield House, the Flackstock festival or walks along the Thames Path. Ample on-site parking and a convenient yet scenic setting add to the hotel’s appeal, making it perfect for weddings, family visits or peaceful retreats.
Breakfast at the hotel receives generally positive reviews with many guests praising the full English breakfast and vegetarian options. The friendly and helpful staff enhance the dining experience. However, some visitors noted inconsistencies in quality and limited options, along with logistical issues such as breakfast timing and availability. Despite these drawbacks, many guests still view the breakfast as a highlight.
Dinner experiences at The George Hotel come highly recommended. Guests repeatedly commend the excellent, varied and well-cooked food, particularly enjoying the burgers and evening meals. The lively bar and friendly, helpful staff contribute to a pleasant dining atmosphere. The restaurant offers good value for money with its diverse menu and reasonable prices. The dining experience is rounded off with a nicely decorated space, making it memorable and enjoyable.
The hotel’s rooms receive mixed reviews. While many guests find the rooms spacious, clean and comfortable with charming period features, others note the dated décor and occasional noise issues, particularly from the nearby railway. Some rooms would benefit from refurbishment and deeper cleaning. Nevertheless, for those looking for a quaint stay in a characterful old building, the rooms fulfill basic needs adequately.
Cleanliness is another area with mixed feedback. Many guests find the hotel clean and well-maintained, but some point out areas showing wear and tear, like outdated bathrooms, dirty carpets and occasional musty odors. While basic cleanliness is generally maintained, a more thorough approach could improve guest satisfaction.
Staff at the hotel are consistently praised for their friendliness, attentiveness and efficiency. The team contributes significantly to the warm and welcoming atmosphere, enhancing the overall guest experience. Despite a few mentions of needing better training, the consensus remains positive regarding the staff's contribution to the hotel's charm.
WiFi experiences are mixed as well. While some guests commend the strong, reliable connection, others face significant issues with connectivity and reliability. Improvements in this area would enhance the convenience provided by free WiFi.
The comfort of the beds also garners mixed reviews. Many guests find the beds clean and comfortable, but issues such as old, sagging mattresses and improperly fitting linens are noted, affecting sleep quality for some visitors. Nevertheless, the friendly reception staff and the hotel’s beautiful location compensate for these drawbacks.
The George Hotel’s character as a historic '80s pub hotel lends it a unique, charming atmosphere. Though some facilities appear dated, ongoing improvements and budget-friendly rates make it a suitable choice for travelers seeking value without five-star expectations. Its fascinating history, including tales of being haunted by a witch, adds intrigue to any stay and its adaptation to modern circumstances, such as pandemic restrictions, is commendable.
In summary, The George Hotel is prized for its historic charm, central location, friendly staff and overall pleasant atmosphere, making it a memorable stay for those who appreciate character, tradition and convenience.
