Adela’s Bed and Breakfast Green Efforts

To borrow from Kermit the frog: "It's not easy being green...".

At Adela's Bed and Breakfast, we believe we are to be good stewards of this earth. In today's disposable society we are finding this challenging. Fifty years ago, most items came in either paper bags, glass jars, bottles, or tin cans which were easy to recycle or did not have the negative impact on our planet that today's plastics do. We are working to toward environmental sustainability through the following efforts:

- Our General-Purpose Cleaner is 49% white vinegar, 50% water, and 1% Liquid Organic Cleaner. We use this on most surfaces including countertops, tabletops, windows, showers, tubs, and much more.

- Our Sanitizer is Decon-30. Made with Botanical Active Ingredients. Kills 99.99% of all bacteria in only 30 seconds. It is food surface contact safe. No synthetic fragrances, dyes, or bleach.

- In the bathrooms the use of our Body wash and Shampoo dispensers compared to individually packaged hotel soaps and shampoos result in less waste not only of the product but packaging as well.

- In the bathrooms our toilets are dual flush water saving toilets.

- Plastic food wrap: Rather than use stretch plastic food wrap in the kitchen whenever possible we now use a natural washable, reusable beeswax food wrap.

- Zip Lock Storage Bags: When possible we are now using a washable, reusable silicone storage bags.

- SA8 Laundry Products: Biodegradable formula. No phosphates, chlorine, or other unpleasant ingredients, so it’s safer for the environment. Safe and effective in all washers, even HE (high efficiency). New packaging is better for the environment. Recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Safer Choice Program for containing safer ingredients that don’t sacrifice quality or performance. Works great in cold water!

- Washing Machine: High-Efficiency washer uses less water. We wash in cold water for the majority of our laundry.

- Clothes Dryer: We use wool dryer balls to eliminate the use of single-use dryer sheets. We also hang dry most of our clothes.

- Nest Thermostat: Allows us to not only set heating and cooling schedules but when we are not home we can remotely adjust the heating/cooling to save energy.

- LED Lightbulbs: When changing lightbulbs, we are replacing all lighting, where possible, in our home with LED lightbulbs.

- Outside Lighting: The outside lighting for the front of the house is controlled by smart switches that only are on from sundown until 12:00 PM which results in more energy savings. After midnight a combination of static and motion activated solar powered lighting is used for safety and security.

- Inside Lighting: Select light switches are smart switches that are programmed to stay on for limited amounts of time before automatically turning off to save energy.

- Recycling Efforts: We recycle as much as the city supports. The curbside pickup includes paper, cardboard, plastics (types 1-7), cans, aluminum foil, tetra drinking boxes. Drop off locations accept glass bottles, Styrofoam, lightbulbs, batteries, electronics and more.

- Bottled and Filtered Water: We offer bottled water in each room fridge but encourage you to use the pitcher provided and drink the filtered tap water as we do. Our water meets or exceeds all federal and provincial standards. The cold-water faucet in the kitchen has a 5-micron filter installed. You are welcome to refill your water pitcher or your own water bottles at your convenience. More information on water quality is included in the room binder.

- Single Use Shopping Bags: We have purchased reusable plastic totes for our groceries. Less plastic in landfill.

- Single Use Trash Can Liners: We are in the process of switching to compostable bags for our trash liners. Less plastic in landfill.

- Single Use Produce Bags: The plastic bags that the grocery store has in the produce section for your fruit and vegetables have been replaced with reusable mesh bags. Less plastic in landfill.

- On Demand Tankless Hot Water: The tankless hot water system heats water only on demand which saves energy. We switched from an electric 50-gallon water tank to tankless system in the summer of 2018.

We continue to look for ways to reduce, re-use and finally recycle to be good stewards of our world.
