The Opononi Hotel is an historic pub with a retro 1960s charm. While it has good bones and is very good value, it appears to be in need of refurbishment and an overhaul with some guests finding it disappointing and noting it has a damp smell odour. Many guests had issues with the key to the doors and noise levels from the pub and other guests. Its location in the middle of nowhere makes it a unique place for everyone to gather, but the cooked breakfast could do with improvement. The receptionist was noted to not wear a mask, which is particularly concerning during the pandemic. Some guests found it to be enjoyable and pleasantly memorable, while others won't be returning and suggest looking elsewhere next time.

Mangonui Hotel is a well-loved establishment, lauded mostly for its prime location and historic charm. Nestled right in the heart of picturesque Mangonui, it offers guests easy access to various cafes, restaurants and a supermarket, all within walking distance. Guests are particularly impressed by the stunning waterfront views from the hotel's balconies and upstairs deck, making it an ideal spot to relax and take in the serene beauty of the town.
The hotel also stands out for its cleanliness, friendly staff and the comfort of its accommodations. Clean rooms with private ensuites and kitchenettes, super comfy beds and welcoming service contribute to a great value-for-money experience. The newly renovated bathrooms add to the comfort, although a few guests noted the lack of air conditioning and some rooms missing certain amenities like a TV or an electric kettle.
Mangonui Hotel’s on-site dining options further enhance the guest experience. The traditional pub downstairs offers a delightful blend of good food and lively atmosphere. Guests appreciate the clean and charming dining setup and praise the fresh, local food options with particular favorites like fish and chips and mussel fritters. The vibrant pub scene with friendly staff and a unique touch—a parrot in the public bar—adds to the appeal, despite occasional wait times for dinner.
Overall, the Mangonui Hotel manages to provide a memorable stay by combining its fantastic location, historic charm, cleanliness and friendly atmosphere. While there are minor areas needing improvement, such as more thorough room cleaning and better communal kitchen facilities, the overwhelmingly positive reviews highlight a cozy and enjoyable retreat in a beautiful seaside setting.
