The Quiver Tree is an iconic feature of the southern part of Namibia. It is most commonly found in areas with very low annual rainfall and can thus survive in the most arid conditions.
The name originates from the traditions of the San people of Namibia, who commonly used the hollow branches to make quivers for their arrows. The tree has a single white stem that can be up to 5 m tall and its crown consists of branches that carry a number of brown-green, boat-shaped leaves.
Between the months of April and June, the tree flowers, producing bright yellow blooms.
Due to the few numbers of young trees that are found in the landscape, as well as the removal of mature trees for private gardens, the Quiver Tree has been listed as a protected species.
Therefore, the Gondwana Canyon Park has been operating a registered endemic tree nursery for more than 15 years, with the focus on growing Quiver Trees.
Guests now have the opportunity to become a part of reintroducing this endangered plant into the landscape within the Gondwana Canyon Park by planting their very own tree.
This can be done when visiting Canyon Roadhouse and one can go and plant the tree oneself into the Park.
