This thousand-year-old castle, apart from centuries deep history, also carries a sad story of star-crossed lovers. As the story goes, in the 14th century, Lord Alberto and his family inhabited the castle. Preparing for a battle with a neighbouring state, a young Captain was sent in the area where the castle is located along with his troops. The Captain fell in love with the Lord's daughter, but since her father did not approve of it, the Captain was order to stay away and the daughter was locked in the castle tower. Unable to forget her love for the Captain, the daughter refused to eat or exit the tower, and she ended up meeting a tragic death due to her broken heart. Visitors have witnessed a figure said to resemble to the poor daughter, who sighs and still waits by the Lake for her Captain to return.

Dating as far back as the 12th century, Tulloch Castle Hotel is said to be the residence of quite a few ghostly guests. The most well-known amongst them is definitely the Green Lady, a ghost who has apparently also been caught on camera, thus spurring many investigations on site and even more documentaries about her story and the castle. Due to her popularity, the castle hotel has given her name to its bar, the Green Lady Bar, while in the Great Hall one can see the portrait of Elizabeth Davidson who is said to be the Green Lady herself.

Mansfield Castle was initially built in the 18th century and has undergone a rather turbulent history since then, constantly being sold and changing owners. One of its longer lasting owners was the Fowler family, who purchased the castle in 1890 until a little before WWII. Mr Fowler died in 1930 and Mrs Fowler died in 1938, continuing to live in the castle until her final breath. It is said that her ghost still lingers in the castle's halls and chambers, showing her concern about the property and its state even after her death.

The historic Holt Hotel carries a rather gruesome history, since its then owners were murdered in 1754 by Claude Duval. Today, many guests have reported seeing the ghost of the highwayman Claude Duval wandering around the premises. Duval was the leader of a notorious gang of highwaymen and was responsible for many murders. Some guests have also said that they heard heavy footsteps in the corridors or felt like they were being watched in their rooms. One guest in particular said he felt his bed vibrate fiercely, while the landlord has also heard voices coming from the attic.

According to a guest who stayed in the castle's Room 22, he was awakened in the middle of the night by loud thuds on the door and the cries of a woman. Ettington Park Hotel, housed in an impressive neo-Gothic mansion, used to be a Roman villa during antiquity, a nursing home during the 1930s and many more before it got destroyed in a fire in 1979 and completely renovated to become the hotel it is today. The ghost of Lady Emma, a former governess, is a regular visitor and is often seen wearing a long white dress before she disappears in the walls. Other ghosts include a monk and two young boys who drowned in the nearby river in the 1800s.

Gerald Fitzgerald, the owner, was beheaded on this castle and rumour has it that his spirit still wanders around its premises, as if to ensure that everything works fine. Another famous ghost is that of Hilda, who appears only on 24 March of every year. No one really knows her story and how she came to haunt Ballyseede, but her eerie presence was enough to scare every single guest away one night in 1998.
