The Lake Hotel was built in 1820 and is said to be haunted by Donal McCarthy Mor, the founder of Muckross Abbey which is near the hotel. McCarthy was a ferocious and heartless warrior and his ghost has been sighted in the hotel's bar, overlooking Lough Leane. Another ghost that has been reported wandering around the hotel is that of a young girl from the 19th century, although her story and reasons for haunting the premises still remain unknown.
