The initial castle building dates as far back as the 10th century, but the castle took its shape in the 11th century. The castle housed many different noble families over the centuries. Due to its strategic location, the castle had been a constant target of enemy attacks during wars, and many were the times when it was almost completely destroyed. In the 18th century, after having been destroyed and rebuilt, its then owner renovated it into a Neo-gothic mansion, a style it retains until today. The castle was first opened as a hotel in 1968, but its turbulent owner history didn't stop there, as it again changed hands many times until its current owners purchased it in 2018.

In the 16th century, the castle was destroyed in a fire, but was soon rebuilt in the shape it had before. Many counts and barons lived in the castle over the ages, and one of them renovated it in the 19th century according to the Gothic-style of the era, a style it retains until today. During most of the 20th century, the castle was used to house miners, and after a renovation that finished in 1999 it was turned into the hotel that it is today.
