Year erected: 17TH CENTURY
What is the history of the property?
The history of Casa Delfino is a story of romance, adventure, and extraordinary twists of fate. The tale begins in 1835 with Giovanni Delfino, a knight and ship-owner from Marseille, who made his fortune transporting goods across the Mediterranean.

On one fateful trip bound for Syria, a storm cast Delfino aground at the Castle of Gramvousa on Crete. He sought refuge in the Capuchin monastery. Delfino managed to salvage his precious cargo of cod, which he sold to the locals at a handsome profit. Quick to spot a gap in the market, Delfino requested another shipment of fish to be sent from Marseille. Along with the cargo, his wife Bianca and their children, Petro and Margaritte, were also dispatched to Crete.

As Delfino’s business continued to flourish, the family decided to settle in Chania permanently. Between 1840-1860, Delfino purchased a grand Venetian mansion in the heart of town, conveniently located close to the harbour.

When Giovanni Delfino’s daughter Margaritte came of marrying age, a suitable groom was found in Marseille. So Margaritte began the long sea voyage to meet her future husband. But destiny intervened: on the way, she fell in love with the captain of the ship, who was a charming Italian. In a flash, Marseille was forgotten, and the young couple turned the ship around and returned to Chania.

The family home was given to Margaritte as part of her dowry. From then on, it became known as Casa Delfino. The happy couple raised six children in the house. All future generations continued to live in the family house, until the Second World War. Casa Delfino suffered severe damages during the German occupation. The house was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin.

Eventually, in 1986, Manthos Markantonakis - a fifth generation descendant of the Delfino family - made it his mission to restore the family home to its former splendour. With great love and care, Casa Delfino was renovated, upgraded, and converted into a luxury hotel. Manthos’ ambition was to recreate the sense of a private residence in the heart of Chania.

Today, the building’s rich and colourful heritage is as much a trademark of Casa Delfino as the exceptional hospitality and elegant interiors. Period antiques and personalised service capture the authentic spirit of this timeless landmark. To this day, Casa Delfino remains a part of the original family's legacy, and is deeply engrained in their hearts.

Questionnaire
Year erected: 1630
What is the history of the property?
The building is one of the two public Ottoman baths (hammams) of Rethymno, which was leading from the outer walls of the city to the fortress entrance of the Venetian Castle. It was converted from a Venetian mansion right after the occupation of the Venetian Rethymno from the Turks. It was functional until the population exchange in 1925, when it became a traditional family bakery and house. Today it is used as a traditional guesthouse. The choice of its location shows its importance to the Ottoman world.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The architectural style of the establishment could be classified in the barrier between the classical Ottoman and its Westernization style.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
The property is located in the center of the old town, where hundreds of old Venetian and Turkish houses exist. Very near one can find the old Mosque with its minaret, the Venetian gate, the Venetian fortress and the Rimondi fountain.
Has restoration work taken place?
The building is fully restored with traditional techniques and materials as defined by the archaeologists, in order to highlight it and to heal its traumas of the past.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
The building preserves the classic division of a typical hammam, with minor differences to its symmetry. It consisted of the warming room and the hot room, with two small rooms included. Each area included a big dome, supported on pendentives, from which the one (warming area) was torn down, in 1925, in order to build a house floor, probably from the bakery owners. It also seems that the Turkish architect was planning to expand the public bath, probably for the division of men and women, but the task was never completed.
Has the property received any certifications for its historical status?
The establishment is inscribed as a monument of the town, named as "ΟΘΩΜΑΝΙΚΟΣ ΛΟΥΤΡΩΝΑΣ" (Ottoman Baths) according to the sentence ΥΠΠΟ/ΑΡΧ./Α1/Φ4/3/22285/3006 (ΦΕΚ 658/Τ.Β/23-05-2000)

In the heart of Rethymno old town, the restoration of two neighboring historic buildings of the Venetian and Ottoman period created the Boutique Hotel ''Casa dei Delfini'' (house of dolphins) whose facade includes two remarkable Renaissance and Ottoman artworks as well as one of the most remarkable reconstructions of Sachnisi, particular elements of the architecture of the old town of Rethymnon.

The surprises of this magnificent Boutique Hotel, reminiscent of a museum, continue in its inner courtyard where we admire the unique stone dolphin pebble, the emergence of two old wells and finally the imposing hall with the five stone columns and arches which has changed many uses over the centuries: monastery dining room, warehouses, stables, olive press and today is a wonderful dining area.
