The Applegarth Villa was initially constructed in 1891 by John Rigg. The Riggs family is considered to be of the first ones who helped develop the tourism industry in the area, as John's father was involved in the construction of the railways. John Rigg resided in the Applegarth Villa until he died in 1927 and it later became the residence of his son. The villa was turned into a hotel in 1934 and has been operating as such until today.
