This is the first hotel built from ice. It was created in 1989 and it is located at the village of Jukkasjärvi – 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, next to the shore of Torne, the biggest river of Sweden. The visitors can indulge in luxurious accommodation not only in cold, but also in hot rooms. The average temperature of Icehotel is -5 C/21 F, while outdoor temperatures range between 20 C/68 F in the summer and -40 C/-40 F during the winter.
The Icehotel is made completely out of ice and every year hosts art exhibitions made of ice and snow.
Torne river provides the amount of ice needed in order for the hotel to be constructed every winter. During the summer, the whole structure melts into the river where it came from, until the following winter that artists from all over the word come in order to buid the hotel again, from scratch.
