What is the history of the property?
For the XIIIth century, the counts of Brach were known as Lords of Montussan. Moune, in the village of the old coaching inn, would date from the same period. It is an old noble house situated in the valley of the Laurence, not far from the castle of Taillefer. It was attacked during the religious wars. Pierre de Brach writes in 1572: « (…) de mille fantassins de qui les estendarts plantés dedans mes champs bouffaient de toutes parts*. »

Ronsart and Montaigne stayed there. Then the house belonged at the XVIIIth century to the family of Bonnefon, who possessed big properties in the parishes of Beychac and Montussan. They were seized by the Revolutionary government and sold in seventeen lots as national domain in the month of brumaire of the year III of the Republic. Sir Labre bought the noble house and the first lot at the price of 28 200 gold francs. This property passed then to mister de Frémont, then by alliance to mister Leymarie, his son-in-law.

Pleasantly situated, surrounded with lawn and with English gardens, Moune and its wooded hundred hectares got then harvests of 70 tons.

A large number of trees in the 10,000 m2 park including an araucaria (monkey tree) and a superb tulip magnolia tree.

For the dark side of the story, there is an unused room that would have been a women's prison.
There would be a tunnel in the park that would go to the church in the town of Montussan, as it is flooded with water, we have no confirmation

Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 15th century
What is the history of the property?
Over the centuries, the Château de l'Epinay has known many illustrious families. Each of them has brought their own touch and contributed to the undeniable charm that characterises it today.

Great Anjou families have owned the fief of Epinay. The Gastinels, founders of the fief in the 12th century, were succeeded by the Montalais de Vern in the 15th and 16th centuries, the La Jaille family in 1451, the Brie-Serrant family and the d'Andigné family. At the end of the 16th century, the land passed by marriage to the d'Andigné family, who kept the fief until 1730, when the de Cumonts became owners. One of the descendants of this family, Arthur de Cumont, who inherited the property in 1874, was Minister of Public Instruction. In our time, the fief was for a long time the property of Mr Gasiorowski, then mayor of Saint-Georges. The castle was bought back in 1988 after many years of neglect and was largely restored with great care.

The fief also evokes one of the most prestigious names in French literature, Jean Racine, whose memory is curiously associated with the history of l'Epinay and more particularly with the Priory through the lawsuit opposing him to Le Ferron to obtain this office in 1666 following the resignation of his uncle Antoine Sconin, canon of Uzès and Prior of l'Epinay.

After 3 years of proceedings, Racine gave up the title of Prior de l'Epinay and kept the echo of these quarrels in the only comedy he wrote: "Les Plaideurs": "Chicanery is a language that is stranger to me than to anyone else, and I have only used a few barbaric words that I may have learnt in the course of a trial that neither my judges nor I have ever heard properly".

The Countess of Pimbèche in this famous comedy therefore owes her existence in part to a disputed title of Prieur de l'Epinay, which Racine nevertheless mentions in the privilege of "Andromaque" in 1667.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
It is a 15th and 17th century house.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
Yes, in the commune of Saint-Georges-sur-Loire, there is the Château de Serrant and a former abbey which now houses the town hall. The Château de l'Epinay is located in the Loire Valley, which is home to many castles, including the Château d'Angers.
Has restoration work taken place?
Many renovations have taken place, and are still taking place. However, we have kept the charm and authenticity of the old building.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
-Mahogany furniture
-Large crystal chandeliers
-Mullioned windows
-The lantern surmounted by a lead finial over one metre high and decorated with a pigeon and three acanthus leaves
-Ruined walkway

Historic Bed & Breakfast Questionnaire

What is the history of the property?
Unfortunately local archives cannot supply sufficient information about original owners but we know that at some stage the chateau was a summer residence of one of Napoleon's generals.

Given the architecture and the location of the house we think it was rather a bourgeois house than an aristocratic residence. Although the presence of the tympanum on the facade and the lack of internal decoration (usually a coat of arms / family insignia) may indicate the removal of aristocratic emblems during the Great Revolution.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
Louis XV
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
There are further historical buildings on site like stables, dovecote or the Orangery. The property is situated 14 km from a historical town of Pezenas (most buildings date back to the 16th century) well known of Molier.

Yes. We started the renovation works in 2014 and conducting it in several stages (converting all existing buildings into accommodation, SPA and wine tasting room) we terminated in 2018.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
We managed to restore a couple of mosaic floors, one of the guest rooms suites has a stucco decorated ceiling, we preserved 19th century troughs which are exposed in one of the gîtes, several rooms have oryginal fire places. In our kitchen we discovered a 16th century bread oven. The property is full of antique furniture and garden statues/fountains.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
In terms of our guests we try to keep their privacy and do not announce to the world whom we host, sorry. In terms of previous owners, as mentioned before, the house used to be a summer residence of one of Napoleon's generals.
