Nestled in the heart of San José's historic district, the Balmoral Hotel is frequently noted for its prime location, making it an excellent base for discovering the city before embarking on broader Costa Rican adventures. Despite being rated as a four-star hotel, various reviews suggest it falls short of such a standard. Guests pointed out that the facilities and services, including the absence of basic room amenities like toiletries and a fridge, do not match typical four-star expectations. Comments about the inability to serve basic drinks indicate a gap in hospitality services.
Many reviews draw attention to a disparity between the hotel's current offerings and what one might expect from a four-star establishment with several guests arguing that it feels more akin to a three-star experience. Despite these critiques, others appreciate the solid management and overall good maintenance of the hotel. While it may not meet the benchmarks of luxury that some travelers anticipate, the Balmoral Hotel remains a well-run establishment, albeit better suited to those with more modest expectations.
